How it is calculated

Each monthly instalment earns interest from the month it is paid until maturity, compounded quarterly (the usual method in Indian banks). Banks may use slightly different conventions, so their figure can differ by a small amount.

Common questions

RD or SIP?
An RD gives a fixed rate with low risk; an equity SIP is market-linked and can grow more over long periods but can also fall. Many people use RDs for short goals and SIPs for long ones.
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes, at your income-tax slab, and TDS may apply.
What if I miss an instalment?
Banks usually charge a small penalty; check your bank's rules.
Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks; read all scheme-related documents carefully. Returns shown are illustrations at an assumed rate and are not guaranteed.
