How it is calculated

Gratuity = 15 ÷ 26 × last basic + DA × years of service

For employers covered by the Act. Service of more than 6 months in the final year is usually rounded up to a full year. Employers not covered by the Act may use 15 ÷ 30 instead.

Common questions

When am I eligible?
Usually after 5 years of continuous service, or earlier in case of death or disablement.
Is gratuity taxable?
For private-sector employees it is tax-free up to ₹20 lakh in a lifetime; government employees' gratuity is fully exempt. Limits change, so check current rules.
What if my employer is not covered by the Act?
Gratuity may still be paid as per your employment terms, often using 15 ÷ 30 of salary per year.
