How it is calculated

Maturity = P × (1 + r ÷ 4)4 × years

with r the yearly rate, compounded quarterly. Interest is taxed every year at your income-tax slab, and TDS may apply, so the amount you keep is lower.

Common questions

Is FD interest taxable?
Yes, at your income-tax slab rate. Banks deduct TDS above a threshold; submit Form 15G/15H if eligible.
Are FDs safe?
Bank deposits are insured by DICGC up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank. Beyond that there is some credit risk.
FD or debt mutual fund?
FDs give a fixed rate; debt funds are market-linked and taxed differently. The right choice depends on your horizon and tax slab.
Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks; read all scheme-related documents carefully. Returns shown are illustrations at an assumed rate and are not guaranteed.
